Search body meets 4 eminent citizens

The search committee has met four eminent citizens in the lineup to reconstitute the Election Commission (EC), which will hold the next parliamentary polls.

The meeting was begun at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge in Dhaka around 11:00am on Wednesday and continued about two hours.

The civil society leaders who attended the meeting are: Former CEC Abu Hena, Daily Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar, The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam and Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud.

After the meeting The Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar put faith on the search body and hoped that they will send the names of prudent persons to the President for reconstituting the EC.

Meanwhile, Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud asked the ruling party to refrain from any kind of interference in forming the new EC.

“What will be the democratic environment of the country is depend on the next parliamentary election. So, the next EC will have to be prudent, honest and brave,” opined The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam.

Earlier on Monday, the EC search committee had sat in a meeting with 12 other representatives of the civil society.

On January 25, President Md Abdul Hamid formed the committee headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and gave them 10 working days to recommend names for the next EC.
