Veteran AL parliamentarian Suranjit Sengupta no more

Veteran politician, Awami League leader and parliamentarian Suranjit Sengupta has died.

He breathed his last at Labaid Hospital in the city early Sunday. The 71-year-old former minister had been on life support at the hospital.

Doctors declared Suranjit Sengupta dead at 4:24am, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said quoting the family members.

He was suffering from acute low hemoglobin and taken to the Labaid hospital in critical condition on Friday night.

The ruling party leader was taken to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital on Saturday night as his condition was deteriorated. Later, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Suranjit left behind wife Dr Joya Sengupta, son Soumen Sengupta, a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.  

Suranjit's body was taken to his Zigatola residence in Dhaka and it will be taken the South Plaza of the National Parliament around 3:00pm for paying homage by MPs and leaders.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ministers and others dignitaries have expressed deep shock at the death of Suranjit.

Born on May 5, 1946 at Anwarpur village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district, Suranjit passed SSC from Dirai High School and HSC from Sylhet MC College.

He completed his graduation and post-graduation in History from Dhaka University and started his career as a lawyer after obtaining LLB degree from Central Law College. He was a member of the Supreme Court Bar Council.

Suranjit had got engaged with leftist politics during his student life. Later, he joined Awami League. He was also a member of 34-member Constitution Drafting Committee, formed after the Liberation War.
