Shimul murder: Journos demand Mayor Miru’s trial at speedy tribunal

The journalists formed a human chain demanding justice for the killing of daily Samakal's Shahjadpur Correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul.

The human chain programme was staged in front of the National Press Club in the city on Sunday noon.

From the programme, the journalists demanded the trial of Shahjadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru, who allegedly shot the fire, at the speedy trial tribunal.

Alongside the Samakal family, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Journalists' Union (DJU) also observed the programme. 

The programme was announced after a protest meeting held at Samakal’s Tejgaon office on Saturday.  BFUJ and DJU also announced for the programme at the same time.

BFUJ faction Secretary General Omar Faruk chaired the human chain programme while Ekushey Padak winning journalist and Editor of the Daily Samakal Golam Sarwar was attended as the chief guest.

Former General Secretary of BFUJ Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ Acting President Atiqur Rahman Chowdhury, National Press Club General Secretary Farida Yasmin, BFUJ Join Secretary Amiya Ghatak Pulak, Press Club Joint Secretary Shahed Chowdhury, DRU President Sakhawat Hossain Badsha, Samakal Executive Editor Mustafiz Shafi, News Editor Mashiur Rahman Tipu, among others, joined the human chain.

Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar said, “Only the arrest of Shahjadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru will not be enough, we want his trial at the speedy trial tribunal.”

 
He also urged the Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader to remove Miru from the party unit's organisational secretary post.

Samakal Journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul sustained bullet wounds during a clash between the supporters of ousted Shahjadpur Municipality Awami League president Abdur Rahim (VP Rahim) and the party unit's Organisational Secretary and Mayor Halimul Haque Miru in Monirampur area of Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur on Thursday.

Shimul succumbed to his injuries around 1:00pm on Friday while being taken to Dhaka from Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogra for better treatment.
