Search body finalising names for EC

The search committee formed for reconstitution of the Election Commission, has sat with its members to finalise the ten names from the previous short-list as they will place the ten names to the President today.

 

The meeting has been started at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge at 4pm.

 

The committee is scheduled to meet president Abdul Hamid today in a bid to place the names for the commission from the short-list.

 

‘The meeting will be held at Bangabhaban in the capital this evening,’ says President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin.

 

Ten names of the short-list would be placed to the president on the day while the search body may also place the summary of the recently held meeting with civil society members, sources confirmed.

 

The search committee, however, met four eminent citizens in the lineup to reconstitute the Election Commission (EC), which will hold the next parliamentary polls.

 

The civil society leaders who attended the meeting are: Former CEC Abu Hena, Daily Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar, The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam and Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud.

 

On January 30, the committee met with 12 eminent personalities in the country.

 

The 12 eminent citizens were – former High Court judge Md Abdur Rashid, Dhaka University Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Prof Dr SMA Fayez, Serajul Islam Choudhury, Advocate Sultana Kamal, former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, former Election Commissioner Sohul Hussain, former Election Commissioner Sakhawat Hussain, Dr. Tofail Ahmed, secretary of Shushasoner Jonno Nagorik Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dhaka University Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq and former inspector general of police Nurul Huda.

 

Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has recently been made the chief of search committee formed for reconstitution of the Election Commission.

 

The other members of the six-member committee are- High Court division Judge Obaidul Hassan, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of Bangladesh Masud Ahmed, Bangladesh Public Service Commission Chairman Dr Muhammed Sadique, Dhaka University Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam and Chittagong University Pro-Vice Chancellor Shireen Akhter.
