9 file nomination to contest Gaibandha by-polls

Nine candidates have submitted nomination papers for contesting the by-elections to Gaibandha-1 constituency, which fell vacant following the murder of Manjurul Islam Liton.  

A total of 11 candidates collected nomination papers for the polls.  Nine of them, including Sundarganj upazila Awami League General Secretary Golam Mostafa Ahmed, submitted their forms till Sunday, the last date of submission.

The last day for nomination paper withdrawal has been fixed on March 1 while the by-elections is scheduled to be held on March 22.

The other candidates are: Shamim Hyder Patwari from JP (Ershad), Advocate Mohammed Ali Pramanik from JSD (Inu), Waheduzzaman Sarkar Badsha from JP (Monju), Shariful Islam from Gano Front, and Zia Zaman Khan from NPP while Mostafa Mahsin, Abdul Majid Mia and Nawshed Ali as independent.

AL lawmaker of Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency, Liton, was shot at point blank range by some miscreants at his village home at Masterpara in Bamandanga union of Sundarganj Upazila on December 31.

The MP was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
