Review plea on BGMEA building demolition dismissed

The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the review petition filed by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to reconsider the verdict on demolishing multi-storey BGMEA Complex.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Sunday.

However, the court also asked the BGMEA authorities to submit a plea seeking time for demolishing the building.

The 16-storey office building of the BGMEA was built in violation of the Wetlands Protection Act nearly two decades ago.

On April 3, 2011, the High Court ordered to demolish the building as it was constructed in violation of the law.

The Appellate Division on May 2 last year upheld the verdict of the High Court rejecting a leave to appeal.

The BGMEA filed a petition for a review of the top court's verdict on December 8 last year, which was supposed to hear today.
