National polls at end of next year or beginning of 2024: CEC

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal announced that the 12th National Parliamentary elections will be held at the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.

He said this in his welcome speech at the meeting with the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police at the Agargaon election building in the capital on Saturday morning.

Awal said, “The Zilla Parishad election will be held on October 17. After that, two by-elections to the National Parliament are scheduled to be held. The 12th National Parliament general election will be held in the last of next year or the beginning of 2024.”

Addressing the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police, the Chief Election Commissioner said, “You are the main administrative unit of the state and the top officials of the district administration. You perform important duties for the people by virtue of your positions. You know the importance of forming the government and local government through elections in a democratic governance system.”

Earlier, the meeting of the Election Commission (EC) with the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police started at 10 am at the auditorium of the Election Commission Secretariat.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal presided over the meeting. Apart from the DCs-SPs, the senior secretary of the public security division of the home ministry and the additional inspector general of police are also present in this ongoing meeting.
