RU innovates high yielding variety of banana

The Rajshahi University (RU) has innovated a high yielding variety of banana aimed at meeting up the gradually mounting demand of the nutritious fruit in the region.

The improved variety has been developed after a long-lasting research conducted by the students, researchers and teachers at the laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology of the university, reports BSS.

Prof Anwar Hossain of the department supervised the research and the innovation.

RU authority has already distributed saplings of the innovated variety among some of the grassroots level farmers for the extension and expansion of farming.

Vice-chancellor of the RU Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and Dean of the Science Faculty Prof Shahed Zaman attended and addressed the distribution ceremony held at the seminar room of the department with its Chairman Prof Tanzima Yeasmin in the chair.

In his remarks, Prof Golam Sabbir said the innovated high yielding and nutritious crops and fruits have become an urgent need to meet the gradually increasing demand amid rising population.

In this regard, the newly innovated banana will play a vital role to attain the cherished goal and the success will inspire other departments concerned to innovate more high quality fruits and vegetables to meet up the nutrition demand of the region.
