Water transport workers call off nationwide strike

Workers of passenger and cargo vessels on the river routes have called off their nationwide strike started on Saturday midnight to press home their 10-point demands, including a Taka 20,000 as minimum monthly wage.

Leaders of the water transport workers withdrew the strike on Monday afternoon following a meeting with State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian and representatives of Launch Owners' Association and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Shrama Bhaban in the city.

The water transport employees earlier went on indefinite strike to press their ten demands, which included a minimum wage of Taka 20,000 per month and provisions for appointment letters, identity cards, service books, and other service benefits.
