Commuters suffer for lack of transport on Dhaka streets

City commuters are suffering since there are fewer buses than normal on the roadways of Dhaka on Thursday. 

Due to concerns about violence and vandalism ahead of the BNP's national protest on December 10, some bus owners have decided not to operate their buses on the city streets.

Since Wednesday morning, BNP leaders and activists have been congregating in front of their headquarters in Naya Paltan. As police attempted to scatter them from the area, clash took place on Wednesday, leaving a man dead and over 50 people injured.

Police officers and armored vehicles were deployed in the areas surrounding Naya Paltan on Thursday morning.

The law enforcers have erected barricades at the Fakirapool crossing and the Nightingale crossroads in Bijoynagar, making it ban for anybody to access the area without identification.

On Thursday morning, there were no vehicles visible in front of the BNP office.

Police dispersed BNP leaders and activists who attempted to approach the area despite the roadblock.

Members of the law enforcement agencies prevented BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from entering the political party's headquarters.
