US expresses concerns over political violence in Dhaka

US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas has expressed concerns over the recent reports of intimidation and political violence in Dhaka.

In a statement published on Thursday on its website, he urged everyone to respect the rule of law and refrain from violence, harassment, and intimidation.

"We encourage the government to investigate these reports of violence and protect the fundamental freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly," Haas said.

The BNP members and police clashed on Wednesday in Naya Paltan in the capital that left a man killed and over 50 others injured.

The US embassy extended its condolences to the family of the man who was killed and those of the injured, the diplomat said.

“We encourage government authorities to investigate these reports of violence and to protect the fundamental freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly,” Peter Haas added.
