Fakhrul, Abbas denied bail again

A Dhaka court has again rejected bail petitions of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party's Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas in a case filed over the clash between party men and police at the capital’s Nayapaltan on December 7.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order on Thursday after holding hearing on the petitions.

The hearing was scheduled for today by Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim earlier on December 14.

On December 12, the court denied 224 accused people's bails for release, including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim, on December 9, imprisoned the BNP's Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The two BNP leaders were brought before the court by the police, who pleaded with the court to retain them in custody until the conclusion of the case's investigation. The court then issued the order. However, the defense argued for their bail.

On December 7, one person was killed and over 50 others including policemen were injured in the clash in front of BNP central office in Nayapaltan.

Police later filed the case against 473 leaders and activists of BNP and another 1,500- 2,000 unnamed people, at the capital's Paltan Police Station.
