Family bears 71 percent of education expenses in Bangladesh

A family bears 71 percent of the total education expenditure in Bangladesh.

Global Education Monitoring Report 2022 made the disclosure in its report released on Tuesday in a hotel in the capital. Nine organizations including BRAC, UNESCO were involved in the preparation of the report.

Minister of Education Dr. Dipu Moni participated in the event as the chief guest. 

According to the report, families in Bangladesh take loans to meet education expenses. About 12 percent of households in South Asia can save money and 6 percent borrow to pay school fees. About one-third of families in Bangladesh take loans to cover the cost of studying at private polytechnics. 

Bhutan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have government student loan programs to provide low-interest loans to students studying at private institutions, it said.

The report is based on Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Maldives, Iran, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka in South Asia.

According to the report, responsibility for primary and secondary education in Bangladesh is divided between two ministries, which are hindering an integrated approach to education.
