AL candidate Ripon wins Gaibandha-5 by-polls

In the by-election to Gaibandha-5 constituency, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, the candidate of boat symbol nominated by Awami League, was elected unofficially by getting 78,285 votes.

His nearest rival AHM Golam Shaheed Ranju of Jatiya Party got 44, 752 votes.

The results were announced separately from the Phulchari and Saghata Upazila Parishad hall rooms on Wednesday (January 4).

Four candidates participated in the polls, said Syed Abu Sayeed, Saghata upazila election officer.

The candidates were: Zahangir Hossain (Bikolpa Dhara), Syed Mahbubur Rahman (Independent), Mahmud Hasan Ripon (Awami League) and Golam Shaheed Ranju (Jatiya Party).

The seat fell vacant following the death Deputy Speaker Adv Fazle Rabbi Miah.
