Nearly 80 lakh maiden voters to participate in next polls

The 79.83 lakh new voters who have been added to the draft voter list by the Election Commission will be eligible to vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections for the first time.

Speaking to media at the EC office on Sunday, EC Secretary Jahangir Alam announced that the final voter list would be published on March 2 this year.

Some 40.72 lakh of the new voters are men, while 39.10 lakh are women.

In order to gather data, EC enumerators went door to door in May and June of last year, he said.

However, the names of 22.09 lakh deceased voters were omitted from the list.

According to Jahangir, the draft voter list had the names of 57.74 lakh voters in total.

After adding 57.74 lakh voters, he said that the total number of voters in the nation now stands at 11.91 crore.
