Haji Salim freed on bail

Former Awami League lawmaker Haji Salim, who was receiving treatment in a cell at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU), has been freed on bail.

His bail papers were sent to the BSMMU on Tuesday, according to Deputy Jailer of the Dhaka Central Jail, Selim.

As Haji Salim exited the hospital, Awami League leaders and activists greeted him with a floral garland.

In a corruption case, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court granted him bail on December 6.

After being found guilty of the graft accusations brought by the Anti-Corruption Commission, he was given a ten-year prison sentence.

For unlawfully acquiring wealth, ACC filed a case with Lalbagh Police Station in 2007 against Haji Salim. 

A Dhaka court condemned him to 13 years in prison and a Tk20 lakh punishment on April 27, 2008. 

Later, Salim appealed the decision to the High Court.

The court overturned his sentence in 2011, but the ACC challenged the decision.
