Recognise 25th March as International Genocide Day: PM to world

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the world community including the United Nations to recognise March 25 of 1971 as the International Genocide Day.

Sheikh Hasina, also Awami League (AL) President, said the Pakistan occupation forces committed killings since this day (March 25, 1971) and continued till December of that year. Under the circumstance she has urge the world including the United Nations to take measures in this regard.

The premier came up with the call at Awami League's parliamentary board's meeting at her official Ganabhaban residence on Saturday.

Sheikh Hasina said, three crore people lost their homes during that time, and 30 lakh people were killed. 

She said that the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, began governing the state while it was in ruins and created a nation that had been torn apart by war.     

She also said on November 3, 1975, four other national leaders were brutally murdered in the Dhaka Central Jail. 

The prime minister expressed her gratitude to all the martyrs. She vowed to work together to make Bangladesh a developed and successful nation. 

The meeting included members of the AL parliamentary board.
