Seminar on ‘Redefining Management of Hemophilia with Prophylaxis’ held at DMCH

A scientific seminar titled ‘Redefining Management of Hemophilia with Prophylaxis’ was held at Dr. Milon Auditorium of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on the occasion of World Hemophilia Day on April 17. 

The seminar was organized by the department of Hematology and BMT Unit, DMCH and Hospital Services Management of the Directorate General of Health Services in collaboration with Roche Bangladesh.

In the programme, the discussants said, “There are several mechanisms by which blood clots after a cut anywhere in the human body. Hemophilia is a rare disease that causes the patient to have problems with blood clotting. In this case, even a very minor injury can cause any accident due to excess bleeding.”

At present, some 3000 patients are suffering from this disease, they informed, adding that Hemophilia patients suffer from various health complications and the families of the patients have to count huge expenses.

Professor Dr. Akhil Ranjon Biswas, head of department of Heamatology and BMT of DMCH presided over the function.

While presenting a report on the occasion, Professor Dr. Akhil Ranjon Biswas discussed various treatment methods for hemophilia, of which prophylaxis type treatment methods are noteworthy. 

This treatment can give the patient a beautiful and healthy life but the treatment is quite expensive, he said.

Akhil Ranjon displayed the ongoing activities and milestones of his department and how it has overtime developed as a centre of excellence.

"Haematology Department of DMCH is working regularly to provide advanced and innovative treatment to hemophilia patients," said DMCH Principal Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury.

Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. A K Md Mustafa Abedin, president of Hematology Society of Bangladesh, in his speech said that it is very important to open the Haematology department in every medical college in Bangladesh.

Professor Dr. Debesh Chandra Talukder, president of Dhaka Medical College Teachers' Association; Md. Nurul Islam, president of Hemophilia Society of Bangladesh; Dr. Ahmad Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Dhaka Medical College Teachers' Association, Prof. Dr. Salma Afrose, former Professor of Hematology of DMCH; Prof. Dr. Zohora Jameela, Head of Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of DMCH; Prof. Dr. Md. Jahidul Islam, Head of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department of DMCH were present as guests of honour.
