Arav Khan gets 10 years jail

A Dhaka court has sentenced Dubai-based gold trader Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in an arms case.

Dhaka Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Murshid Ahammad pronounced the verdict on Tuesday. The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, of which he would serve another three-month imprisonment.

The court had earlier set May 9 for pronouncing judgment in the case, in which ten witnesses out of a total 20 have been examined.

Arav, a fugitive accused in the murder case of a police inspector, was arrested in Moghbazar on January 28, 2015, with a loaded revolver as he allegedly went there to threaten his father-in-law Sekendar Ali to extort money from him.

Police later filed the case against him with the capital's Ramna Police Station.

Investigation officer and detective branch (DB) of police sub-inspector Sheikh Hasan Muhammad Mostafa Sarwar on March 1, 2015, filed a formal charge against him. On May 10, 2015, the court framed charges against Arav, but he managed to secure bail on March 14, 2018, in the case.

The court on October 24, 2018, issued an arrest warrant against Arav.
