Cyclone Mocha: Strong wind, rain batter St Martin's Island

Inhabitants of Saint Martin's Island have already started witnessing the impacts of Mocha as the very severe cyclonic storm has started to cross Cox's Bazar-North Myanmar coast.

Along with the arrival of high tide, intermittent rain and gusty wind have started lashing the island, creating panic among the people.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kamruzzaman said, "There has been intermittent rain and strong wind on Saint Martin's Island since the morning. The inhabitants of the island have been brought to hospitals, hotels, motels, and shelters to ensure their safety. In total, 30 thousand people are in shelters at Saint Martin's Island and in Teknaf."

Former UP member Md Nazir said, "So far, nothing disastrous has happened on the island."

He, however, said food shortage has emerged at the cyclone centres.
