Cyclone Mocha: Thousands of houses damaged in Rohingya camps

Cyclone Mocha has damaged thousands of houses in the Rohingya camps in Teknaf and Cox's Bazar as it crossed the coast on Sunday.

Heavy rain and gusty wind lashed the coastal areas, prompting the locals to seek refuge in the cyclone shelters.

At around 3pm, around 300 people were evacuated from the Jadimura camp in Teknaf. Women and children were given shelter in Mosques and Maktabs.

Teknaf Leda Rohingya camp's Rohingya leader Noor Bashar said strong wind and rain caused by Cyclone Mocha damaged many houses. A lot of people have sought shelter in their relatives' houses.

Nearly a thousand people in the camp had their houses damaged in the storm.

Ukhiya Kutupalong Rohingya camp's inhabitant Md Yunus said nearly 500 houses in that camp collapsed in the storm. Three people were injured after trees fell on them.

People who became homeless were being given emergency assistance.

Cox's Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said nearly 2,500 Rohingyas have become homeless due to the cyclone. More than five thousand Rohingyas have been evacuated to a safer location.
