Cutting trees in Dhanmondi: Protesters call off movement following assurance

Protesters have called off their movement to besiege the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Nagar Bhaban on Sunday after getting assurances from the authority.

The protesters had planned to surround the Nagar Bhaban to protest felling trees on the road divider of Sat Masjid Road in Dhanmondi for development work.

Police barricaded the Bangabazar circle to stop the protesters from reaching Nagar Bhaban. Protesters then took up position at the side of the road and were chanting slogans.

A DSCC delegation, including the DSCC CEO Md Mizanur Rahman, met the protesters and assured them of finding a solution to the situation. The protesters then called off the day's event. However, their other programmes, including guarding the trees, would continue.

Earlier, the protesters gathered at Shahbagh’s Doel Chattar, and started marching towards the Nagar Bhaban at around 11am.

The protest programme was announced at a press conference on Saturday afternoon in front of the Abahani playground in Dhanmondi.
