Threatening PM: BNP leader Chand arrested

Police have arrested Rajshahi district unit Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) convenor Abu Sayeed Chand from Rajshahi for allegedly making a “death threat” against Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina.

Chand was arrested from Rajashahi city's Veripara Mor at around 11am. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Anisur Rahman confirmed the matter to the Daily Samakal.

“He was arrested after we searched a microbus,” Anisur said. Chand was brought to RMP headquarters after the arrest.

The BNP leader reportedly made the threat at a rally in Rajshahi on Friday.

An AL leader filed a case against Chand on Sunday under the Anti-Terrorism Act for the threat.

On Tuesday, Magura Jubo League Convenor Fazlur Rahman filed another case against Chand, this time under the defamation and Digital Security Act (DSA), at the court of Magura First Class Magistrate Humayun Kabir.

The Magura court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Chand over the case.
