Coal shortage: Production at Payra power plant comes to a standstill

Operation of the second unit of the 1,320 MW coal-fired Payra power plant was suspended due to a coal shortage at around noon on Monday.

Bangladesh-China Power Company (Pvt.) Limited (BCPCL) Managing Director AM Khurshedul Alam confirmed the matter.

BCPCL, a joint venture of the Chinese firm China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CMC) and Bangladeshi state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (NWPGCL), is the owner and operator of the Payra power plant.

The plant has two units. each having 660 MW capacity. The first unit of the two was already shut on May 25.

Meanwhile, the ongoing load-shedding situation in the country has further worsened due to the shutdown of the Payra power plant. Frequent power outages have made people's lives miserable as a heatwave is also sweeping across the country.
