Life-term fugitive convict held after 13 years

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 and RAB-1 in a joint raid on Sunday arrested a fugitive convict sentenced to life term for raping a teenage girl of Lalmonirhat from Dhaka, after 13 years of the court's verdict.

"The arrested man is Md Mojnu Mian, 54, of village Chinipara in Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat district," reads a press release issued by Senior Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-13 Flight Lieutenant Mahmud Bashir Ahmed on Monday.

Mojnu Mian in association with his friend Saidur Rahman, 35, of the same area tactfully took the victim girl, 15, to a place in Thakurgaon where Saidur, Mojnu Mian and another man confined and raped her some 15 years ago.

Later, a case was filed in this connection with Lalmonirhat Sadar police station and police rescued the victim girl and arrested accused rapist Mojnu Mian. Later, a local Lalmonirhat court sent him to jail.

Since getting bail in the case, Mojnu Mian had been on the run and he lived here and there in Dhaka city in the guise of different identities for the last 13 years.

Later, a Lalmonirhat court sentenced Monju Mian to life term imprisonment in the case in his absentia in 2010 and issued a warrant of arrest against him.

Alongside the police, RAB-13 enforced intelligence activities, started a shadow investigation into the case to nab the absconding rapist and finally identified the location of Mojnu Mian.

Accordingly, members of RAB-13 and RAB-1 jointly conducted a raid at Dhar Government Primary School area under Turag police station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and arrested Mojnu Mian on Sunday.

For taking further legal actions against the convicted rapist, the elite force handed him over to Lalmonirhat Sadar police station, the release added.
