Actions to be taken if ambassadors cross limit: Shahriar Alam

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said that the government will take necessary measures if the foreign ambassadors assigned to Bangladesh cross the boundaries of their work.

The minister uttered the warning when he was asked whether Japanese Ambassador Iwama Kiminori's meeting with Chief Election Commissioner and BNP leaders involved interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs or not.

He said, “I do not know the details (about the two meetings of the Japanese ambassador). There must have been an issue six months ago. If the ambassadors again engage in activities that seem to be overstepping the limit of their job, we will certainly take necessary actions. But so far we have not seen anything like this.”

Advising everyone to be aware at this time, Shahriar Alam said, “The closer the election, the more misinformation will surface on social media. Everyone should be aware of this.”

In response to a question about the letter written by six US Congressmen to US President Joe Biden, he said, “There is a major lack of information. We will contact with them if necessary. The election is approaching and more of these issues will come in future.”

The Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh met the BNP leaders at the party’s Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Sunday.

On Thursday, the envoy met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal and wanted to know about various issues related to the upcoming elections in Bangladesh.
