Threatening PM: BNP leader Chand sent to prison

Rajshahi District unit BNP convenor Abu Sayeed Chand was sent to prison in a case filed for allegedly making a “death threat” against Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina.

Abu Sayeed was brought to the Faridpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate No. 1 Amli Court on Tuesday at around 11:30am. He was shown arrested in a DSA case filed with the court and was sent to prison. The plaintiff's lawyer Jahid Bepari confirmed the matter.

Abu Sayeed Chand reportedly made the threat at a rally in Rajshahi on May 19.

An AL leader filed a case against Chand on May 21 under the Anti-Terrorism Act for the threat.

On May 23, Magura Jubo League Convenor Fazlur Rahman filed another case against Chand under the Defamation and Digital Security Act (DSA) at the court of Magura First Class Magistrate Humayun Kabir.

The Magura court on May 24 issued an arrest warrant against Chand following the case.

Police arrested Chand from Rajshahi city's Veripara Moor at around 11am on May 25, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Anisur Rahman told The Daily Samakal.

On May 25, Rajshahi Judicial Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed an order placing Chand on a five-day remand, as police produced Chand before the court and pleaded to place him on a 10-day remand.
