Jamuna narrowing project documents brought to HC

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has brought project papers of the Jamuna River narrowing project to the High Court on Sunday.

These documents will be produced before a bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam, lawyer sources confirmed.

On May 28, the High Court asked the government to submit the project files, as well as a list of officials involved in the proposal for the Jamuna River narrowing project.

The bench issued the directive after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh in the public interest.

The court adjourned the hearing of the petition until June 11.

The writ petition was filed referring to a newspaper report published on March 11 stating that the Bangladesh Water Development Board prepared a pilot project to reduce the width of the Jamuna River to 6.5 kilometres from 15 kilometres without any study at a cost of Tk 1,110 crore.
