BSMMU interns block VC office, stage demo for fair wages

At least 500 post-graduate private trainee doctors under the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) staged a demonstration to demand increased wages on Tuesday.

The protesters gathered in front of the BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Sharfuddin Ahmed's office at around 11:30am and started their demonstration, at which time they engaged in an altercation with members of law enforcement agencies on duty.

Intern doctors at the demonstrations voiced a three-point demand, including raising their monthly allowances to Tk 50,000.

The protesters said the monthly allowance for trainees of the non-residence course was fixed at Tk 20,000 for the 2019-20 session. The allowance became irregular from the following year.

Non-resident doctors of the 2022-23 session only received 3 months' allowance in a year. As the trainees are not allowed to work elsewhere, they are struggling to make ends meet, the trainee doctors claimed.
