18.7% people poor in Bangladesh

The poor people of the country is 18.7 percent and the percentage of the extreme poor is 5.6 percent.

Planning Minister MA Mannan made the disclosure while responding to a query made by Hazi Mohammad Selim of Dhaka-7 at the question-answer session which was tabled at the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the session.

The minister told the parliament that the poverty rate has been evaluated by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on the basis of cost of basic needs in the year 2022.

The basic cost of necessities includes spending on food on a daily basis, food on a weekly basis, non-food on a monthly and annual basis, education, health care, and durable goods for the home.
