Bangladesh has 10-year reserve of natural gas: Nasrul Hamid

The country has a 10-year reserve of natural gas, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

On an average, 2200 million cubic feet of gas is being produced daily in the country, the state minister said while responding to a star-mark question made by Kazim Uddin Ahmed of Mymensingh-11 at the question-answer session at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was in the chair. 

The major gas reserve of the country is 40.43 trillion cubic feet, including the stock from the recently found Ilisha gas field, while the reserve of extractable gas is 28.76 trillion cubic feet.

He asserted that of the recoverable gas, 19.94 trillion cubic feet had already been extracted, leaving 8.82 trillion cubic feet of untapped reserves.

The state minister responded to a different inquiry by stating that our indigenous source and imported LNG supply around 3 billion cubic feet of gas everyday.

In 30 districts, natural gas is currently provided to a variety of consumers, including those who utilize electricity, captive power, an industrial fertilizer mill, compressed natural gas (CNG), homes, businesses, and tea gardens.

The gas is provided by six gas distribution companies: Titas Gas, Bakhrabad Gas, Jalalabad Gas, Karnaphuly Gas, Western Gas, and Sundarban Gas.

According to the state minister, new gas well discoveries could increase the country's gas reserves.
