Teesta swells, sparks fear of flood among locals

The Teesta River neared danger mark at the barrage area, prompting authorities to open all 44 gates of Teesta Barrage in an attempt to rein in the high water pressure on Saturday.

The action sparked fears of flood among residents of the adjoining areas.

Sources at the Rangpur Water Development Board (WDB) said due to heavy rains in the upstream areas of Teesta, the water level gradually rose in the last five days and neared the danger mark.

Around 9am on Saturday, the water level at Dalia point of the barrage was recorded at 52.2cm.

Executive engineer of WDB's Dalia division Asfauddoula said they were trying to control the situation by opening the 44 gates of the barrage.

However, the official said the river's water level will continue to fluctuate throughout the rainy season. Lowlands may get inundated if the water level rises.

Residents of Gangachara and Kaunia upazilas have become anxious with the fear of flooding.

Abdullah Al Hadi, chairman of Lakkhitari Union of Gangachara said, "We have received news that Teesta's water level has risen. We are remaining vigilant about the situation."

Rangpur WDB Executive Engineer Ahsan Habib told the Daily Samakal, "The water level at Teesta barrage area was 52.6 cm on Saturday morning, though it decreased later. It is normal for the water level to fluctuate at this time."
