Teesta flowing above danger mark at Dalia Point

The water level of the Teesta River is flowing above the danger level following heavy rainfall and an onrush of water from upstream.

Farmers in the adjoining areas are fearing the loss of crops including paddy, peanuts, and pumpkins.

The water level at Dalia Point of the Teesta River crossed the danger mark at around 6am on Monday. The water level was recorded at 52.2cm, which was 0.5cm above the danger level.

Many crop fields in low-lying areas of Nilphamari and Lalmanirhat have become inundated, locals said. They fear that the crops would become spoiled in the water.

Executive engineer of WDB's Dalia division Asfauddoula said Teesta has swelled due to heavy rainfall and an onrush of water from upstream in the last few days. The authorities are trying to control the situation by opening the 44 gates of the barrage.

"There is a chance of flood if the water level continues to rise," he said.

Tepa Kharibari Union Parishad Chairman Moynul Haque said, "We have heard about water entering some places. Those places are being monitored."
