Rajshahi, Sylhet city polls held peacefully

Polls to Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) were held peacefully.

The voting of two city corporations began at 8am on Wednesday and continued till 4pm without any break.

In total 3,51,982 voters of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) were set to exercise their right of franchise in EVM in 155 polling centres in 30 wards.

Four candidates, including RCC former Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, are now in the race for the mayoral post.

Three others mayoral candidates are  Jatiya Party candidate Saiful Islam Swapan (Plough), Islami Andolon Murshid Alam Faruqui (Hand Fan) and Jaker Party Latif Anwar (Rose).

Meanwhile, 111 individuals are participating in councillor posts in 30 wards.

RCC returning officer and Rajshahi regional election officer Delwar Hossain, said, "Five-tier security measure has been ensured. Police, RAB, BGB, Ansar, and armed police will be in charge of security."

He also said that one magistrate for each ward, and one judicial magistrate for every three wards will be in place.

On the other hand, elections were held using EVMs in 190 centers under 42 wards of the Sylhet City Corporation.

A total of 4,87,753 voters in the Sylhet City Corporation were set to cast their vote to choose their mayor and councilors.

Faisal Qadir, regional election officer of Sylhet, said five tiers of security measures have been taken to hold the election in a free, fair and credible manner.

As part of security measures, a good number of police, RAB, BGB, Ansar and Armed Police have been deployed, he added.
