Bangladesh, Nepal to sign 25yr power sale deal

Bangladesh is going to sign a 25-year agreement to import 40MW of electricity from Nepal.

The proposed agreement will be finalised through a tripartite agreement between Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, concerning the transmission of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh utilising Indian territory, Power Division Secretary Habibur Rahman told the Daily Samakal.

The electricity will reach Bangladesh using the high-voltage Baharampur-Bheramara cross-border transmission line. It will be supplied from Nepal's Likhu-4 hydroelectric project.

Meanwhile, Nepal's news media Kathmandu Post reports, "Even though the two sides are yet to negotiate the tariff to be charged on the electricity, the duration of the agreement has been settled. This will ensure a long-term market for Nepal’s electricity in Bangladesh."

"We have agreed to sign a 25-year power sale agreement with Bangladesh," Kul Man Ghising, managing director of Nepal Electricity Authority, told the Post. "It is in line with our proposal to the Bangladeshi side."

India has also expressed its readiness to facilitate electricity trade between its two neighbours, the Nepali media reports.
