APBn-ARSA 'gunfight' kills 1 at Rohingya camp

A member of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) was killed in an alleged gunfight with members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at a Rohingya camp of Ukhiya Upazila in Cox’s Bazar early on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Hossain.

Confirming the matter, 14-APBn commander (additional deputy inspector general) Syed Harun-Or-Rashid said the gunfight erupted at camp number 17. 

"After receiving information that ARSA members were present in the camp, a team of APBn conducted a drive there. They (ARSA members) shot at police. Police shot back for self-defence. A Rohingya man was shot dead during this," he said.

The commander also said the deceased is a high-level member of ARSA. There are several murder charges against him.

Police seize a large number of arms, ammo, walkie-talkie, mobile phones, and SIM cards from the location. The drive is ongoing to capture other ARSA members, Syed Harun-Or-Rashid said.
