Ex Gulshan Thana OC, wife jailed

A Dhaka court sentenced Firoz Kabir, the former officer-in-charge of the Gulshan police station, and his wife Sabrina Ahmed to six and four years in prison, respectively, in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court also fined Tk1,74,34,638, and Tk87,17,194 was seized in favor of the government.

On the presence of the due, Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-9 handed down the verdict on Wednesday morning.

Kabir and his wife Sabrina Ahmed were both released on bail. But after delivering the verdict, the court ordered to send them to jail.

Between January 1, 2012, and May 31, 2016, Kabir—also a former inspector of the Barishal District—deposited about Tk3.10 crore in five of his bank accounts and one of his wife's.

Even though the bulk of account openings stated his source of income as "employment," the amount was out of proportion to his pay and allowances.

None of the defendants could provide a strong defense or piece of evidence when questioned about the true source of the money, therefore ACC Assistant Director Syed Ataul Kabir filed the case with Gulshan Thana on October 3, 2017.

A charge sheet was pressed against them on March 10, 2019.
