Record 2,292 dengue patients hospitalised in a single day

Dengue-related hospitalizations in Bangladesh have reached a record 2,292 in a single day, bringing the total for this year to 32,977.

In a 24-hour count on Sunday, the disease-transmitted by mosquitoes death toll increased by nine to reach 176.

A total of 1,064 of the newest hospitalized patients with the condition were in Dhaka, while 1,228 were outside the capital.

Eight deaths were reported in Dhaka, and a ninth occurred across the country.

A total of 7,175 dengue patients are now being treated in hospitals. 4,149 of them are in the capital city of Dhaka, and 3,026 are elsewhere.

In 2023, the dengue outbreak has grown more severe than in prior years.

Given the sharp increase in dengue cases this year, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has just released detailed guidelines on how to prevent infection.

Dengue infection has grown five times in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year, according to DGHS data.

A mosquito-borne disease called dengue fever affects tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Disease outbreaks typically peak during and immediately following the rainy season.
