No plan to use CC cameras in national elections: EC

After withdrawing from the decision to use EVMs in the upcoming 12th national parliament elections, the Election Commission announced the cancellation of the CC camera project.

“There is no plan of using CC cameras in the upcoming 12th national parliamentary elections,” Election Commissioner Md Alamgir came up with the announcement while talking to reporters at his office in the capital's Agargaon election building on Sunday.

EC Alamgir said, "There was no formal discussion regarding the issue among the members of the Election Commission. There is voting in 300 constituencies and there are 4,00,000 polling stations. It is very difficult to monitor so many centres by installing CCTV cameras. There will be a good number of vulnerable centres. In that case, special measures will be taken in those centres only and necessary number of law-and-order forces will be deployed there.”

In response to a question, Alamgir said the Election Commission is under no pressure regarding domestic and international observers. 

He also said that the commission has no objection to foreign observers if the foreign ministry issues visas to them.

“Instructions have already been given to the field level officials to select the centres for the parliamentary elections. In this regard, the committee consisting of Deputy Commissioner and Upazila Nirbahi Officer is scheduled to submit the final draft list to the EC on September 24,” Md Alamgir continued.
