Bangladesh New Delhi mission observes National Mourning Day

The National Mourning Day and 48th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed on Tuesday in Bangladesh High Commission, New Delhi with due respect and solemnity.

To mark the day, the mission observed several programmes including hoisting of the National flag at half-mast, paying tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reading out messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam.

The mission held a discussion on the life and struggle of Bangabandhu, the founding Father of Independent Bangladesh, and later offered a special munajat seeking divine blessings of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his other family members, who embraced martyrdom on a fateful night on August 15, 1975, and continued peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.

A documentary on August 15 was screened on the occasion.

Bangabandhu and most of his family members were brutally killed by some disgruntled army men on the fateful night of August 15, 1975, and this carnage is touted as the ugliest chapter of the nation's history.

The day's programmes began with the hoisting of the National Flag at half-mast of the Chancery premises. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Md. Mustafizur Rahman along with other officers, employees and staff hoisted the flag when the national anthem was played.

Later, Rahman flanked by mission officers paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing floral wreaths at his portrait on the mission premises.

Besides, the high commissioner paid tribute to Bangabandhu along with the New Delhi Correspondent of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Aminul Islam Mirja on behalf of the national news agency of Bangladesh. They were followed by the employees and staff of the high commission.

A discussion was held at the Bangabandhu hall of the high commission on the life and struggle of the greatest Bangalee of all times Bangabandhu Sheikh Mijubur Rahman. High Commissioner M. Mustafizur Rahman and Defence Adviser of the mission Brigadier General Abul Kalam Azad took part in the discussion.

Paying rich tribute to Bangabandhu, the high commissioner said Bangabandhu, the greatest Bangalee of all times, sacrificed his life for the welfare of the people. He urged the new generation to learn from the life of Bangabandhu to be worthy citizen of Bangladesh.

The Defence Adviser highlighted different chapters from the historic life and struggle of Bangabandhu and called for following the great leader in every sphere of human life.
