Nuclear fuel reaches Rooppur

The first consignment of 'Nuclear Fuel' or Uranium of the first unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant reached project area in Pabna’s Ishwardi from Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

The uranium was transported by roadway through special security measures. The vehicles carrying uranium left Gazipur at around 7am on Friday.

The convoy reached the Rooppur project area at 1:15pm, said project director of Rooppur project Dr Shawkat Akbar.

He said that the army and law enforcement officers were in charge of special security in the transportation of uranium.

The radioactive fuel will be stored at the project site, according to sources in the power plant.

Director General of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Aleksey Likhachev is set to hand over the fuel officially to the project authority in the Rooppur project on October 5.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin are likely to join the function virtually.

The first batch of consignment of uranium arrived in Dhaka from Russia on Thursday afternoon through a special air cargo.
