Dinajpur mayor gets one-month jail for contempt of court

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday convicted and sentenced Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam to one month in jail for committing contempt of court through derogatory remarks about an apex court judge.

A five-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order, disposing of a contempt of court proceeding drawn against Alam. The court also fined him Taka one lakh or to suffer seven days more behind bars in default.

The Supreme Court asked Syed Jahangir Alam to surrender before the Dinajpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque moved a plea filed against the contemnor, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin took part in the hearing for the state. Senior lawyer Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus argued for Alam, also a leader of BNP.

Supreme Court lawyers Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, Mahfuzur Rahman Roman, Md Moniruzzaman Rana and Shafique Raihan Shawon filed the petition against Syed Jahangir Alam, pleading to initiate contempt of court proceedings against him for making derogatory remarks about Justice M Enayetur Rahim.

The apex court, after that, ordered him to appear before it on August 24. Alam appeared before the court and offered an unconditional apology. The Appellate Division after that had set today for further hearing on the matter.
