Sheikh Russell Day to be observed in home and abroad

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division has taken the initiative to observe Sheikh Russell Day-2023 on Wednesday in home and abroad in a befitting manner. 

State Minister for ICT Junaid Ahmed Palak made the disclosure on Tuesday.

Homage will be paid by placing wreaths on the portrait of Sheikh Russell in the premises of respective ministries, departments, offices, organizations and institutions under the initiative ICT Division.

Apart from that, government bodies, ruling Awami League and its associate bodies and different socio-cultural organizations will observe various programmes at national and international levels.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Sheikh Russell Day-2023 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) as the chief guest.

The premier will also announce the Sheikh Russell Medal 2023 and the Smart Bangladesh Award.

ICT Division and Sheikh Russell Jatiya Shishu Kishore Parishad will hold a colorful rally on the premises of Bangabandhu International Conference Center.

Russell, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32 in the capital.

But he was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu, on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School.

The Cabinet Division in 2021 declared October 18, the birthday of Sheikh Russell, as ‘Sheikh Russell Day’ under the category "Ka".

The day will be observed at Bangladesh missions abroad while different TV channels will air special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
