Last session of 11th JS begins today

The last session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) will begin on Sunday afternoon.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin, on October 5, summoned the 25th session exercising the power bestowed upon him as per the Article 72 (1) of the Constitution.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will chair the session at 4pm at the Parliament Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.

Critics say the parliament was virtually lifeless for most of the term due to the lack of a viable opposition party.

The 24th session of the current parliament was prorogued after nine sittings on September 14.

The 11th Parliament began sitting on January 30, 2019, and it will adjourn on January 29, 2024, having served for five years.

Therefore, in line with article 123 of the constitution, the next general election would have to be held within ninety days after January 29, 2024, in the event that parliament is dissolved owing to the end of its term.

The 11th Parliament convened for the first time on January 30, 2019, and will conclude its five-year mandate on January 29, 2024.
