Security beefed up at Nayapaltan-Motijheel

Members of the law enforcement agencies have taken up positions around Nayapaltan and Motijheel areas of the capital in anticipation of rallies to be held by political parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, respectively, on Saturday.

BNP and other like-minded political parties and alliances have also made preparations to arrange separate rallies in different spots in the city to press home the one-point demand that includes the resignation of the Awami League government and holding the next election under a neutral government.

Leaders and activists of the BNP started to flock to the capital's Nayapaltan on Saturday morning in anticipation of a grand rally in front of the party office. The rally is scheduled to start at 2pm.

Meanwhile from Saturday dawn, Jamaat leaders and activists were flocking to Motijheel. Police removed them from the streets, but they again gathered in the area at around 8:30am.

A large number of law enforcers were seen in Motijheel, Arambag, Rajarbag, Fokirapool, Bijoy Nagar, and Kakrail areas.

Paltan Model Police Station Inspector Sentu Miah said party men who took up positions in these areas or brought out processions were removed by the police.

The ruling Awami League is also scheduled to hold a rally in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram mosque, which is 1.7 kilometres away from the BNP’s venue at Nayapaltan.
