Female RMG worker dies in clash with police in Gazipur

A female garment worker was killed in a clash between police and workers while staging demonstrations for realizing a minimum salary of Tk 23,000 in Konabari area of Gazipur on Wednesday.

Anzuara Khatun, a worker of garment factory in Konabari, was injured in the clash and she was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Md Jamal Hossain, husband of Anzuara.

Garment workers staged demonstrations and started vandalising factories in an attempt to get other workers to join their movement. Later, the workers started throwing brick chunks at the law enforcers, forcing the police personnel to fire tear gas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

During the clash, Anzuara sustained bullet injuries and she was sent to local clinic and from where she was shifted to DMCH.

Contacted, AKM Ashraf Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Metropolitan's Konabari Police Station said, "The workers set fire to tyres, wastages on regional roads and created blockade. Later tearcells and sound grenades were thrown at the unruly workers to control the situation. Some of them were injured. And we received the news of the death of the female worker.”

On Tuesday, the government announced Tk 12,500 for garment workers as minimum salary.

However, the union leaders rejected the decision.
