Protesting RMG workers block Mirpur streets

Protesting RMG workers blocked the streets in the Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-13 areas of the capital on Sunday.

They took up position on both sides of the Mirpur-13 road at around 8:30am. However, they dispersed at around 10:30am.

Confirming the matter, Kafrul Police Station Officer in Charge Faruqul Alam told the Daily Samakal that the workers moved from Mirpur-13 to Mirpur-10 area.

Workers have said that they are dissatisfied with the announced wage hike. When they went to join work on Sunday, they found out that their salaries were increased disproportionately. So they are protesting again.

Mirpur Model Police Station Officer in Charge Md Mohsin told the Daily Samakal that workers blocked the Mirpur-10 road at around 9:30 am and started protests. They dispersed after 2 hours.

RMG workers have been protesting since October 23, demanding a minimum wage of Tk 23,000. The government has announced the minimum wage of Tk 12,500, but the workers have rejected the decision and continued their protest.

Around 130 RMG factories were closed indefinitely in Savar and Dhamrai.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has hinted that the factories will not open unless the situation improves.

About 22 cases were filed in the incidents of protest and vandalism in Gazipur, where 15-16 thousand unnamed people were accused.
