BGMEA calls for heightened security at factories

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the government to provide adequate security measures so that RMG factories can operate.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital on Sunday, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan also called for identifying the people who are plotting against the RMG industry.

"We have noticed that even after a wage hike, many factories are being vandalised in the name of a movement," he said at the press conference.

He accused there have been attempts to instigate unrest among the RMG workers at a time when the industry is struggling to survive global and economic pressure.

Urging the government to take action, he said, "Identify those who are plotting against this industry and take measures. Give us adequate security to run factories. Politics and economy fulfil each other."

RMG workers have been protesting since October 23, demanding a minimum wage of Tk 23,000. The government has announced the minimum wage of Tk 12,500, but the workers have rejected the decision and continued their protest.

Around 130 RMG factories were closed indefinitely in Savar and Dhamrai.

The BGMEA previously hinted that the factories will not open unless the situation improves.

About 22 cases were filed in the incidents of protest and vandalism in Gazipur, where 15-16 thousand unnamed people were accused.
