Dhaka roads witnessing higher traffic on Monday

An increased number of vehicles were seen on the roads of Dhaka on Monday, the second day of a 48-hour road, rail and waterways blockade called by the BNP.

More buses and passengers were seen on the roads. The number of private cars, CNG-run autorickshaws, and motorbikes also increased from Sunday. Such scenarios were seen at the capital's Paltan, Kakrail, Malibagh, Moghbazar, Shahbagh, Science Lab, Newmarket, Dhanmondi, Asadgate, Farmgate, Mohakhali, and Tejgaon areas.

Traffic congestion occurred at busy intersections of the city. Many commuters said they left home early to reach their destination on time on Monday morning.

A passenger named Abdul Hamid said he had to struggle to get on a bus.

"There is not much effect of the blockade on traffic. But the number of vehicles lessens in the evening," he said.

Abdullah, a helper of the Gazipur-bound VIP-27 bus said he experienced traffic jams in places. The number of passengers also increased.

However, long-distance bus drivers and workers are struggling to make ends meet as there are not enough passengers. Many buses are left idling at the terminal.

The blockade started at 6am on Sunday (November 12) and will end at 6am on Tuesday (November 14).

This is the fourth blockade called by the BNP to mount pressure on the government to step down and hold the next election under a non-partisan administration.
