Security secy, IG prisons apologise to SC

Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General ASM Anisul Huq and Secretary of the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs Md Abdullah Al Masud Chowdhury have apologised to the Supreme Court for failing to implement the SC's verdict on the promotion of six prison officers.

They appeared before a six-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, and apologised unconditionally.

The Appellate Division gave them time till February 4 to implement the verdict fully. The same date was fixed for the next hearing on this matter.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court summoned the IG prison and security secretary to explain why the Supreme Court's verdict on the promotion of six prison officers was not implemented.

Advocate Ibrahim Khalil appeared for the petitioners in the court and Advocate Shafiqul Islam appeared for the jail authorities.

In April last year, the Appellate Division ruled on a review petition filed by six prison officials regarding their promotion. The court directed the respondents to consider the promotion of applicants (six jail superintendents) at the earliest in light of the Officers and Staff (Department of Prisons) Recruitment Rules, 1984.

In September last year, five officials, including promotion aspirant Md Nurunnabi Bhuiyan, filed five separate petitions for contempt of court for not implementing the verdict's directive.
